MANCHESTER, Oct. 29 – RHAM put four girls in the top 20 to unseat the Avon High girls cross country team in the CIAC Class MM championship race Saturday at Wickham Park.

RHAM beat the Falcons, 68-99 to win the Class MM championship. Guilford was third with 109 points while East Lyme was fourth with 141 points. It was the second straight week that RHAM prevailed over Avon. A week ago, the Sachems beat Avon by nine points to finish fifth at the CCC championship race – also at Wickham Park.

On Saturday, RHAM beat Avon by 31 points led by top 10 finishes from Libby Walker (4th, 20:31), Brooke Almeida (8th, 20:38) and Abigail Potticary (10th, 21:02). It was the first state title for RHAM since 2007 and the sixth in school history. A year ago, Avon beat RHAM by nine to win the state championship.

Junior Emily Foley led the Falcons with a sixth place finish in 20:37 to earn All-State honors. Junior Rachel Martin (13th, 21:17) and senior Christina Martin (20, 21:41) finished in the top 20. Sophomore Caroline Luby (30, 22:06) and senior Christine Oberhausen (35, 22:13) rounded out the top five for Avon.

Avon’s season will continue. For the fifth time in the last six years, the Falcons have qualified for the CIAC State Open that will be held Friday, Nov. 4, at Wickham Park.

Senior Zach Bortoff earned All-State honors with a sixth place finish in the Class MM boys championship race to lead Avon to a fourth place finish in Class MM.

Bortoff, who qualified to run in the State Open, led the Falcons with a time of 17:19 over the 3.1 mile course at Wickham Park. Junior Jack Stokesbury finished 17th with a time of 17:52.

Joel Barlow won the Class MM championship by beating Guilford, 88-106. Weston was third with 132 points with Avon taking fourth with 156. Berlin was fifth with 188.

It was just Avon’s third top five finish in over 34 years. Avon was second in 2014 in Class MM and fourth in Class SS in 1992.
