Cross country: Avon girls take 5th at Windham Invitational; AHS boys finish 12th

MANCHESTER, Oct. 8 – The No. 7 Avon High girls cross country team could only place two runners in the top 30 of Saturday’s seeded race at the Windham Park Invitational and finished fifth.

St. Mary’s Academy Bay View from Providence easily won the race with 106 points followed by Derby (172), Simsbury (174) and RHAM (177). Avon was fifth with 198 points – its lowest finish since finishing tenth in the unseeded race in 2010.

The Falcons had finished either first or second in the last four years in the seeded race.

Emily Foley led the Falcons by finishing 12th with a time of 20:55 and Caroline Luby was 29th with a time of 21:31. But there was too big of gap to the next runners for the Falcons to contend. Rachel Martin was third on the squad with a time of 21:56 (46th place) followed by Christina Martin (46, 22:08) and Christine Oberhausen (62, 23:38).

On the boys side, Avon was 12th in the seeded race. Zach Bortoff led the Falcons with an 18th place finish in 17:24. Jack Stokesbury (44, 17:57) and Jon Hernandez (52, 18:02) were the only Falcons runners in the top 60.

Avon (3-0, 3-0 CCC Central White) hosts Farmington in the final regular season dual meet on Thursday at Fisher Meadows. The Avon boys and Avon girls can both win the division title with a victory.
