Five Avon High athletes earned first team All-State honors this fall

AVON – Five Avon High athletes earned first team All-State honors for their play on the athletic fields this fall. Cross country runners Zach Bortoff and Emily Foley earned All-State honors along with girls soccer player Megan McKenna and field hockey players Hannah Deppe and Lauren Jeandell.

Junior volleyball player Maddy Hart earned second team All-State honors along with field hockey player Olivia Jackson while 26 Avon High athletes earned All-Central Connecticut Conference honors in their respective sports.

Bortoff won three individual dual meets and led the Falcons to the CCC Central White Division title and a fourth place finish at the Class MM meet. He earned All-State honors by finishing sixth in Class MM.

Foley had two individual dual meet victories and helped Avon win the CCC Central White crown for the second straight season. The Falcons won three invitational meets during the season. Foley earned All-State honors with a sixth place finish at the Class MM meet where Avon finished second.

McKenna had a team-leading six goals as the Avon girls soccer team qualified for the CIAC state tournament for the 31st consecutive season. The Falcons (12-5-1, 6-2-1 CCC Central White) were second in their division behind Northwest Catholic (7-2).

Deppe (8 goals) and Jeandell (3 goals) helped Avon (12-5, 6-1 CCC South) to a second place finish in the CCC South behind undefeated Glastonbury (16-0, 7-0). The Falcons won their final 12 games of the regular season.

Jackson, who earned second team All-State honors, led the Falcons with a team-high 13 goals, including scores in seven of the final eight games of the season.

Hart led the Falcon spikers with a team-high 295 kills and 73 serving aces. She was second on the team in digs with 221.
