Five Avon swimmers earn All-State honors; 13 honored with All-CCC recognition

AVON, March 28 – Five swimmers from the league champion Avon High boys swimming team earned All-State honors this winter. Thirteen Avon athletes earned All-Central Connecticut Conference honors for their play during the winter campaign.

Kyle Emery, Brendan Downey and Andre Richard earned All-State honors along with Avon’s 200-yard medley relay team that finished second at the Class M championship meet. The top three individuals and top two relays earn All-State honors.

Emery finished second by less than a second in the 100 freestyle (0.78 of a second) and in the 100 back stroke (0.20 of a second).

Emery also finished second with Avon’s 200-yard medley relay team (Emery, Alec Traktovenko, Laura Pringle, Andre Richard) that finished second with a school record time of 1:40.97. Weston, which won the Class M championship, easily won the race in 1:36.19. As a member of the relay team, Pringle became the first Avon girl to earn All-State honors in the boys swimming season and the first Avon girl to qualify to compete at the CIAC State Open in the boys swimming season.

Richard finished third in the 50 free while Downey was third in diving to earn All-State honors.

Avon (13-2, 5-0 CCC North White) won their first division title in the CCC and captured the CCC North White championship for the second straight year.

Avon High defenseman Peter Hoffman earned second team All-State honors in ice hockey playing for the Farmington Valley Generals, the co-op team with the Falcons, Farmington, Lewis Mills and Windsor that won the CCC South title and advanced to the CIAC Division II quarterfinals. Teammate Tim Arena of Farmington earned first team All-State honors.

Thirteen Avon High athletes earned All-Central Connecticut Conferences honors including nine from the boys swim team.
