SOUTHINGTON, April 26 – After plenty of rainy afternoons and cold weather earlier this month, the Avon High track and field team finally got to compete. The Falcons faced Southington and Wethersfield on Wednesday.
Junior Carly Carpino won four individual events as the Avon girls split their season opener with a 74-67 win over Wethersfield and an 84-56 loss to Southington. The Avon boys lost to Southington, 114-26, and to Wethersfield, 86-54.
Carpino won the triple jump with a leap of 34 feet, one inch and took the long jump with a leap of 17-1. That’s no surprise. She holds the school record in both events and finished sixth in the long jump at the State Open last spring.
What was impressive was her wins in the 100 meter hurdles and 300 hurdles. Carpino’s time of 16.63 seconds in the 100 hurdles was the fourth fastest in school history. It was just the third time she has run the event. Carpino ran the 300 hurdles for the first time and her winning time of 49.74 was also the fourth best time in school history.
Avon (1-1) also had three other individual winners. Sophomore Gina Lindley beat Southington’s Abby Connolly by 0.02 of a second to win the 100 meters with a winning time of 13.37 seconds while Emily Foley won the 800 meters in 2:28.0. In the 3,200 meters, juniors Haley Gens and Sara Leavens finished first and second.
The Falcons had seven of the top places in the 1,600 meters, led by Gens who was second in 5:34.93 followed by Rachel Martin, Leavens and Rhiannon Richmond.
In the boys dual meet, Avon (0-2) had two individual winners. Senior Zach Bortoff beat Southington’s Shane Leone to win the 800 meters while junior Marek Cierniewski won the javelin by nearly eight feet with a throw of 139 feet, two inches.
Andrew Mascoli was second in the pole vault with a leap of 9-6 while Cierniewski was third in the shot. Jon Hernani took third in the 1,600 meters with a time of 4:58.79.
This was Southington’s third dual meet of the season and the Blue Knights have already competed in two weekend invitationals.
Avon returns to action on Tuesday when they host their first meet of the season against Windsor. A few days later, they’ll be in action at the Amity Invitational in Woodbridge with a handful of athletes competing at the Irv Black Invitational in New Britain the next day on Saturday, May 6.
