CANTON, April 25 – It was a tough day to be outside on Tuesday. It was cloudy and raining. The baseball players were inside along with the softball team and players from the golf and tennis programs.
Canton’s track and field athletes were competing as scheduled rolling to easy victories over Hartford Classical. The undefeated boys team (5-0) extended their school-record dual meet win streak to 84 with a 110-26 victory while the girls team also remained unbeaten (5-0) with a 121-23 decision over Classical.
Canton coach Tim O’Donnell doesn’t hesitate to allow the Warriors to compete in the rain. It’s good preparation for the CIAC championship meets in late May. Those meets run rain or shine. The only thing that stops those championship meets is lightning.
In the boys event, Dustin Van Kirk won three events for the Warriors (5-0, 5-0 NCCC) sweeping the 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles and the triple jump. Max Sparks swept the 1,600 and 3,200 meter races.
Aidan O’Donnell, Anthony Burns, Patrick Lagonigro, D.J. Clement, James Pelehach and Ben Robinson also won individual events for Canton. The Warriors, Coventry (3-0) and Ellington (3-0) are the lone undefeated teams left in the boys race.
In the girls competition, Emily Mitchell (100, long jump), Chelsea Mitchell (200, 400), Abbe Skinner (high jump, 100 hurdles) and Amber Harraden (300 hurdles, triple jump) each won two individual events to lead Canton (5-0, 5-0 NCCC).
The Warriors, Suffield (3-0) and Ellington (5-0) are the only girls teams left undefeated in the league.
Canton will compete at the Dan O’Grady Relays in Danbury this weekend. They return to NCCC competition on Tuesday when they host East Windsor and Bolton at the high school. Next Thursday, Canton travels to Ellington to face the Purple Knights and Coventry in a big meet with league championship ramifications for the boys and girls teams.
