CANTON, May 30 – Sam Beadle’s single to left field with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning lifted the Canton High baseball team a thrilling 5-4 win over Old Saybrook in the first round of the Class S tournament Tuesday at Bowdoin Field.
It was the longest game for the Warriors in 12 years since dropping a 5-4 decision to Windsor Locks in 12 innings in the 2005 Class S championship game. No. 15 Canton (12-9) moves onto Wednesday’s second round game at No. 2 Lyman Memorial (19-2), beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Canton had a three-run lead after one inning but the visiting Rams battled back, tying the game at 4-4 with a two-out single to right field in the top of the sixth inning.
The Warriors had a runner on third base with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning but couldn’t get him home. Tyler Delehoy struck out when his attempted bunt with two strikes went foul. Jack Mansur flew out to end the inning.
Canton didn’t squander their opportunity in the eleventh inning. Delehoy led off with a double to left field and Mansur singled with Delhoy moving to third base. After a strikeout and Mansur stealing second base, Nate Fulham coaxed a walk off Old Saybrook reliever Ryan Dubond to load the bases.
Beadle’s RBI single to left field won the game for Canton. Beadle was 2-for-5 with an RBI while Fulham was 3-for-6. Mansur was 2-for-5 while Ethan Burke was 1-for-3 with two RBI for the Warriors.
Burke went seven innings for Canton, allowed 10 hits and gave up four runs. He fanned seven. Mattson earned his team-leading fifth win of the season in relief, going four innings and giving up just one hit. He struck out three.
Canton took a 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks to five walks off Old Saybrook starter Jaden Rolon and an error. But Rolon didn’t walk another batter for the remainder of his five inning stint.
Old Saybrook cut the lead to 3-1 in the second inning on a RBI single from Brian Schuster (2-3) and trimmed the lead to 3-2 in the third inning on Justin Phillips’ RBI double.
The Warriors extended the lead to 4-2 on a sacrifice fly from Burke in the fifth inning. The Rams tied the game with a two-out rally in the sixth inning.
Schuster was hit by a pitch, Jack Colella singled to center field and Patrick Kelley walked to load the bases. Jaden Rolen’s two-RBI single to right field tied the game at 4-4.
