CANTON, May 20 – Northwestern’s Vinny Tancreti had a double, triple and two RBI as the Highlanders held on for an 8-7 victory over Canton on Saturday at Bowdoin Field. The Warriors had 11 hits could never grab the lead.
Pitcher Jason Reola scattered 11 hits and struck out seven to earn the victory for Northwestern (7-10).
Northwestern took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run single from Lucas Gryniuk but Canton rebounded quickly on a two-run home run from starting pitcher Nate Fulham to tie the game at 2-2.
The Highlanders took command in the second inning, scoring five runs to take a 7-2 lead. Joey Grantmeyer had a two-run homer for Northwestern while Tancreti had a two-run double.
Canton (10-8, 8-6 NCCC) cut the lead to two runs in the third inning. Ryan Enns and Fulham singled before teammate Sam Beadle drove in Enns with a RBI single. Ethan Burke’s single loaded the bases before Mattson’s sacrifice fly to center field drove in a run and another run scored on an infield ground ball from Jack Rose cutting the lead to 7-5.
Regional extended their lead to 8-5 in the sixth when Tancreti tripled and scored on a wild pitch.
Canton tried to rally in the seventh. With one out, Fulham and Beadle singled. Burke popped out to second base for the second out of the inning but Mattson ripped a two-run double to cut the lead to one, 8-7. But Rose fouled out to the catcher to end the game.
Fulham and Beadle were each 3-for-4 for Canton with Fulham driving in two runs and Beadle one run. Enns was 2-for-4 at the plate while Gavin Wood was 2-for-3.
Fulham had a rough day on the mound, giving up seven hits and six earned runs in less than two innings. Mattson came on in relief and allowed just two hits and struck out five in 4 2/3 innings. He did walk four.
Canton returns to action on Monday when they host NCCC champion Ellington (17-0) at 4 p.m. at Bowdoin Field. The Warriors close out the regular season on Wednesday at Bolton.
