AVON, June 13 – On a steamy, summer evening, the pitching was hot at Buckingham Field. Avon’s Chris Jacobs allowed just two hits and struck out seven to lead the undefeated Avon American Legion baseball team to a 2-0 Zone 1 victory over Terryville Tuesday night.
Jacobs went the distance and didn’t allow a walk as Avon improved to 5-0 overall and in Zone 1.
Terryville’s Dominic Zappone pitched well over six innings, allowing just two hits but he faltered in the fifth inning, walking three and hitting a batter as Avon scored their only two runs of the game.
Tied at 0-0, Avon’s Joe Suski led off the fifth inning with a double to left field – the only extra-base hit in the contest. He moved to second base when Sean Del Gallo walked. The bases were loaded when Zappone hit Will Thramann with a pitch.
Avon took a 1-0 lead when Justin Olsen grounded into a fielder’s choice with Suski scoring from third base. Adam Theriault coaxed a walk from Zappone to load the bases for a second time. A walk to Jacobs forced in the second run.
Jon Wilson and Zack Harnish had singles for Terryville. It was just Avon’s third win over Terryville in their last seven games.
Avon returns to the field on Wednesday night when they host Winsted at Buckingham at 5:45 p.m.
