BRISTOL, July 22 – West Hartford scored four times in the fourth inning and added an insurance run in the seventh inning to beat the Avon American Legion baseball team in a Northern Division state tournament game Saturday at Muzzy Field.
West Hartford, which finished second in Zone 7 to RCP, advances to face South Windsor on Sunday at 4 p.m. here at Muzzy Field while Avon (21-7) plays an elimination game against Waterford on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Muzzy Field. South Windsor beat Waterford, 4-1 on Saturday.
West Hartford had 10 hits off Avon pitching to take control of the game. The contest was tied at 2-2 after three innings before Post 96 broke through against Avon starter Kyle Emery.
Post 96 loaded the bases with none out in the fourth inning on a pair of hits and a hit batter. Catcher Sean Langan hit a two-RBI single to give West Hartford a 4-2 lead. Additional runs scored on a sacrifice fly and another walk to give Post 96 a four-run lead, 6-2.
Avon did load the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning on singles from Sean Del Gallo and Will Thramann along with a walk to Justin Olson. But West Hartford reliever Patrick Baron coaxed Jeremy Zarwanski to pop it up in the infield to end the threat.
Avon took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a RBI single from Zarwanski. After West Hartford took a 2-1 lead, Post 201 tied it with a RBI double from Chris Jacobs in the third inning.
Luke Fox led West Hartford by going 3-for-4 while Maxwell Main was 2-for-4 at the plate. Joe Celio had a solo home run in the seventh inning for West Hartford.
Theriault was the only Avon player with multiple hits – two singles.
