UNCASVILLE, Aug. 18 – Collinsville’s Mark Shaker sang the national anthem before the start of Friday night’s WNBA game between the visiting New York Liberty and the Connecticut Sun at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
It’s nothing new for the Canton native and Master’s School graduate who has been singing the national anthem at a host of sporting events in the Northeast over the past few months.
Shaker sang the national anthem for the first time at Cameron Indoor Arena before the Duke men’s basketball team hosted Michigan last November.
Since that time, he has sung the anthem at several events including UConn men’s basketball, UConn women’s basketball, New York Red Bulls soccer, New England Revolution soccer, University of Hartford men’s basketball, Fairfield men’s basketball, UConn men’s hockey and Harvard’s men’s basketball games.
A big sports fan, Shaker was excited to perform before the game on Friday night because he was a Detroit Pistons fan when he was a young boy and one of the best players for the Pistons when he was a youngster was Bill Laimbeer, the current coach of the New York Liberty.
You can see more of Shaker’s performances on his You Tube page.
Gerry deSimas, Jr., is the editor and founder of The Collinsville Press. He is an award-winning writer and has been covering sports in Connecticut and New England for more than 30 years.
