Canton girls remain undefeated (4-0); Avon girls earn first wins of season

SIMSBURY, Sept. 19 – The Canton High girls cross country put four runners in the top five to beat Ellington, 25-31 Tuesday at Stratton Brook Park and remain undefeated at 4-0. The Warriors (4-0, 4-0 NCCC) also beat East Windsor, 15-50.

Jane Frawley led Canton by taking second, followed closely by Julia Caputo, Belle Magna and Helena Winkler, who helped the Warriors earn the win by beating Ellington’s Lia Guerette by three seconds to finish fifth. It was Ellington’s first loss of the season.

Canton, Granby (5-0) and Coventry (5-0) are the only undefeated teams left in the NCCC.

In the boys race, Canton senior Max Sparks won his second consecutive dual meet of the season with a 35-second win over teammate Aidan O’Donnell. But Ellington swept the meet with a 26-29 victory over Canton and a 15-50 win over East Windsor. The Knights (4-1) had their top four of their top five runners finish in a place between third and seventh place. Canton is 3-1 on the year.

The Warriors return to action next Tuesday when they travel to Coventry to run against the Patriots, Granby and new NCCC member Rockville. 

The Avon High girls cross country team won their first dual meets of the season on Tuesday by sweeping Southington, 15-50 and Conard, 15-50, in CCC West action at Fisher Meadows. Senior Sara Leavens earned the win for the Falcons, capturing the 3.1 mile run in 19:19. Avon is now 2-2.

The Avon High boys cross country team dropped a pair of matches to Southington, 15-50 and Conard, 15-50 in a pair of CCC West contests. Conard’s Tyler Remigino won the race in 16:34. The Falcons slip to 0-4 on the season.

The Falcons return to action on Saturday at the Winding Trails Invitational in Farmington.
