Roundup: Nieves runs for 4 TDs as Simsbury tops Hall in season opener

football graphicWEST HARTFORD, Sept. 8 – Rafael Nieves ran for four touchdowns to lead the Simsbury High football team to a dominating 42-7 win over Hall Friday night in CCC Division I action. After scoring a touchdown in the first quarter, Nieves had touchdown runs of 97, 12 and 55 yards. Tate Valerio also caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from QB Jackson Masters.

MERIDEN, Sept. 8 – Running back E.J. Dudley ran for two touchdowns while QB A.J. Marinelli threw three TD passes to lead the host Panthers to a 42-7 win over Farmington Friday night in the season opener for both teams at Falcon Field.

Marinelli threw a 10-yard TD pass to tight end Elijah Felton, a 16-yard touchdown pass to Devon Gardiner and a 15-yard TD reception to Tremaine Carter. Farmington (0-1) scored its lone touchdown in the fourth quarter on a diving touchdown reception from Aidan Sposato from QB Zac Conrad.

North Branford 28, Granby 21
NORTH BRANFORD, Sept. 8 – North Branford scored a touchdown in the final 1:37 of regulation to beat Granby in the season opener for both Pequot Conference teams on Friday night at Colafati Field. Granby led 14-7 at halftime and 21-14 before the Thunderbirds (1-0) scored 14 unanswered points to earn the victory.

Coventry co-op 34, Lewis Mills 0
BURLINGTON, Sept. 9 – The Coventry/Windham Tech/Bolton/Lyman Memorial co-op football team returned a pair of interceptions for touchdowns to lead the Patriots to a 34-0 shutout win over Lewis Mills on opening day Saturday in Burlington. Zachary Shroyer returned an interception 58 yards for a touchdown while teammate Nick Provonost returned an interception 50 yards for a TD. Shroyer also caught a 17-yard TD pass from QB Jacob Carlson, who also ran for a 17-yard touchdown.
