Behind two top 10 teams, Avon girls finish third at CCC championship meet

MANCHESTER, Oct. 17 – The Avon High girls cross country team may find next week’s Class MM championship meet easier than this week’s Central Connecticut Conference event.

The Falcons finished third behind Glastonbury, the No. 1 ranked team in the latest state coaches poll, and No. 6 Hall.

The Tomahawks easily won the meet with four runners in the top 16 to score 65 points to beat Hall, which had three runners in the top 13 runners and 102 points. Avon finished with 145 points.

As members of the CCC West Patriot Division, Avon raced Glastonbury and Hall this fall. In the CCC West Patriot, Glastonbury finished first with a 14-0 record – seven wins against CCC West teams in the Patriot and Colonial Division and seven wins against the CCC West teams at the CCC championship meet. Avon was 4-3 in dual meets against CCC West competition and 5-2 at the CCC championship meet to finish with a league record of 9-5.

“It was tough but the team really rallied together to be respectable,” Avon High coach Al Dadario said.

No. 10 Avon (11-5, 9-5 CCC West Patriot) had three runners in the top 25 with senior Sara Leavens (20:11.9) finishing 15th, sophomore Rhiannon Richmond (20:22.9) finishing 20th and senior Emily Foley (20:31.9) taking 22nd place.

All three earned All-Conference honors along with Rachel Martin, Ashley Martin and Carolyn Luby. Avon’s third place finish in the CCC championship meet was its best finish in its third appearance in the event. The Falcons were fourth overall in 2015.

Next up for the Falcons will be the Class MM championships on Saturday at 10:20 a.m. here in Wickham Park. Avon, who was second a year ago in Class MM, will be challenged by defending Class MM state champion RHAM and No. 9 E.O. Smith. The Sachems finished fifth on Tuesday but they were missing one of their top five runners.

The Avon High boys cross country team finished 16th at the CCC championship meet and was led by Anish Rajamanickham (68, 18:08.5) and Jack Stokesbury (84, 18:21.9). The Falcons were 2-5 in the dual meet portion of the regular season in the CCC West Patriot Division and were 3-4 at the CCC championship meet. Avon finished 7-9 in the CCC West Patriot and 8-10 overall.

The Falcons will run in the Class MM championship meet at 10:55 a.m. on Saturday.
