Generals beat Conard for third time to earn berth in Div. II championship game

Farmington Valley’s Tim Arena had three goals as the Generals beat Conard, 4-1 Monday night to earn a berth in Friday’s CIAC Division II championship game.

NEW HAVEN, March 12 – Farmington Valley forward Tim Arena (Farmington) scored three goals including a shorthanded goal in the first period to lift the Generals into the CIAC Division II championship game with a 4-1 victory over Conard at Ingalls Rink on the Yale Campus Monday night.

The Generals, the co-op team made up of primarily Farmington and Avon players, will play for a state championship on Friday night at Ingalls Rink against defending Division II champion Guilford at 7:30 p.m. The Indians beat Watertown/Pomperaug, 2-1 in the other semifinal contest.

Farmington Valley (18-3-1) beat Conard for the third time this season. Goalie Trevor Paluso (Avon) had 12 saves to lead the top-seeded Generals, who have three players from Lewis Mills and one from Windsor on the roster. Owen Lacourciere (Mills) had the other goal for the Generals along with two assists

Arena has scored seven goals in three state tournament games including a hat trick in the 7-1 quarterfinal win over South Windsor. Lacourciere and Kyle Kadziolka have each scored four goals in the Division II tournament.

Top-seeded Farmington Valley has 18 wins — one victory shy of the co-op record of 19 victories set a year ago.

Avon has never played for a state championship in hockey. From 1999 through 2008, Avon and St. Paul had a co-op team. Avon’s 2011 team that was a co-op team with Windsor and East Granby did advance to the Division III semifinals.

Avon has been a co-op team with Farmington and Windsor since 2012. Mills joined the Generals co-op three years ago.

As a stand-alone team, Farmington won its only state title in boys hockey in 2005 with a 5-4 double OT win over Trumbull in the Division II final.
