Hard-hitting N.W. Catholic hands Avon their fourth loss; Simsbury ‘9’ tops Hall

Avon senior Connor Harris struck out six but it wasn’t enough as Northwest Catholic handed Avon their fourth loss on Friday.

WEST HARTFORD, April 20 – Pitcher Luke Fox gave up just three hits and struck out 14 to lead the Northwest Catholic baseball team to a 9-1 victory over Avon in CCC West play on Friday. Fox also had a double for the Lions (3-4).

Five Northwest Catholic players had multiple hits led by Colby Lytle, who was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Evan Clark, Shayne Rice, Connor DiAngelo and Matt Lewczk each had two hits. DiAngelo had a double while Lewczk drove in two runs. The Lions had 13 hits — the most given up by the Falcons this season.

Falcon pitcher Connor Harris, now 0-3 on the year, struck out six in four innings of work but allowed nine hits. Miles Borenstein hit a home run for the Falcons (1-4). Avon is off to their worst start since beginning the 2014 campaign with an 0-4 record.

The Falcons get back to work on Saturday when they travel to Granby for a non-league contest.

Simsbury 7, Hall 3
WEST HARTFORD, April 20 – Simsbury High pitcher Jack Donofrio pitched into the sixth inning, struck out eight and allowed just one hit to help the Trojan baseball team beat Hall-West Hartford, 7-3, on Friday in CCC West action.

Donofrio also contributed at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double. Simsbury (3-2) had four doubles in the game from Donofrio, Luke Benneche, Mason Valentino and Tate Valerio. Benneche was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

Leading by a run, Simsbury took a 3-0 lead in the third inning. They added three more runs in the sixth thanks to a RBI single from Peter Phillips and a double from Benneche.

Simsbury returns to action on Saturday morning with a non-league game at Suffield.
