Stahl and Smith brings home a pair of silver medals for Granby in Class M

Granby’s Nicole Szilagyi and Plainville’s Sydni Spencer race in the finals of the 100 hurdles in Tuesday’s Class M championship meet in New Britain. Szilagyi finished seventh, 0.01 of a second behind Spencer.

NEW BRITAIN, May 29 – Granby’s Mackenzie Stahl finished second in the javelin and discus to help the Granby Memorial girls track and field team finish 13th at Tuesday’s Class M championships at Willow Brook Stadium. Stahl threw the javelin 105-4 feet and threw the discus 103-3 feet, just six inches behind the winner Niah Mesidor of Oxford (103-6).

Nicole Szilagyi took seventh in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.70 seconds while Northwest Catholic’s Katherine Jacobs won the event with a new meet record time of 14.59 seconds.

Freshman Lauren Roy took fifth in the long jump (16-11½) while Isabelle Provencher took eighth in the high jump with a leap of 4-8.

The Granby boys finished eighth in the Class M meet. The Bears had three athletes in the top five in the long jump with Andel Smith finishing second with a leap of 21-10¾ inches, Jemarre Dudley taking third (21-9) and Keon Lawrence (21-6½) finishing fourth.

Smith also took second in the triple jump with a leap of 43-8½ feet with Dudley finishing fourth. Lawrence was eighth in the 100 meters with a time of 11.65 seconds.

Staples Cameron Whalen moves ahead in the finals of the 110 high hurdles in Tuesday’s Class M championship meet in New Britain. Whalen won in 14.67 seconds.

Hillhouse won the Class M girls championship with 105 points easily pulling away from Weston (56.3). In the boys competition, Windham slipped past Stonington, 74-67 1/2 to win the state championship.
