With big win over HMTCA, Canton softball team captures second straight game

Canton’s Emma Love has six hits in the last two games — a pair of victories for the Warriors.

HARTFORD, May 3 – Emma Love and Katelynn Horvath each had three hits as the Canton High girls softball team scored a season-high 22 runs in a 22-6 win in five innings over Hartford Magnet Trinity College Academy Thursday in North Central Connecticut Conference play.

Horvath was 3-for-3 with four RBI and a double while Love was 3-for-7 as the Warriors (3-5, 3-5) captured their second straight game. Loren Mossey had a single, double and three RBI while pitcher Bailey Edgren was 2-for-3 with two RBI.

This was Canton’s third of six games this week. The Warriors began the week with a 14-3 loss to Somers on Tuesday but bounced back with a thrilling 6-5 road win over Windsor Locks in eight innings on Wednesday.

Canton travels to Farmington (8-4) on Friday for a game that begins at 3:45 p.m. and then plays a home-and-away doubleheader with Coventry (9-1) on Saturday.

On Wednesday, Canton had a 4-2 lead before Windsor Locks tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Warriors took the lead in the top of the eighth inning. Ainsley Hill led off the inning with a single to left field and moved to third base on Edgren’s double to right field. Hill scored on a ground ball to the pitcher and Edgren scored on a ground ball to shortstop to give Canton a two-run lead, 6-4.

In the bottom of the eighth, Canton reliever Loren Mossey walked the Raiders’ leadoff hitter Brittany Townsend, who moved to second base on a ground ball out. Townsend took third on a wild pitch.

Townsend cut the lead to one run when Hannah Farr (3-for-5, 2 RBI) reached on an error. Farr stole second base before Mossey got the second out of the inning on an infield fly ball.

The game was over when Canton catcher Morgan Giblin threw out Farr trying to steal third base. Giblin’s strike to Horvath at third base was right on the money to secure the victory. Mossey picked up her first victory of the season with three innings of work.

Love was 3-for-4 with one RBI and a double for the Warriors in the win while Edgren and Hill were each 2-for-4.
