There is a new No. 1 team in girls lacrosse in Connecticut – New Canaan. The Rams capped off a heart stopping week on Saturday with an 19-7 win over Ridgefield to win the Class L championship.

New Canaan was a unanimous selection as the No. 1 team in the state in the final state coaches poll of the season.

That championship win came days after the Rams stunned Darien, 12-11 in a thrilling Class L semifinal. The win snapped a 107-match winning streak for Darien against Connecticut opponents. The Blue Wave had won five straight Class L championships.

The last team to beat Darien? It was New Canaan in the 2012 Class M quarterfinals.

Darien (19-3) slipped to No. 2 with Wilton, which lost a four-goal decision to New Canaan in the quarterfinals, remained at No. 3. With their drive to the championship game, Ridgefield (14-6) moved up three spots to No. 4.

The FCIAC had four of the top five teams in the state, according to the poll, and the top four slots.

Cheshire, who lost in overtime to Ridgefield in the Class L semifinals, 14-13, slipped one spot to No. 5.

Class M champion Branford, who beat Hand, 11-8 for the title, was ranked No. 7 with two-time Class S champion New Fairfield coming in at No. 10 after their 9-6 victory over East Catholic-Manchester.
