Simsbury American Legion opens Zone 1 campaign with shutout; Avon wins opener

TORRINGTON, June 10 – Jake Nichols, who made nine appearances this spring with the Rensselaer Institute of Technology (RIT) baseball team, pitched four shutout innings Sunday as the Simsbury American Legion baseball team opened their Zone 1 campaign with a 10-0 win over Torrington at Fussenich Park.

Nichols, who is from Granby, struck out six and allowed two hits in four innings of work. Post 84 pitchers combined to strike out nine Torrington batters. Canton’s Dylan Schnetzel, who played at Avon Old Farms this spring, pitched an inning of scoreless relief, striking out two.

Granby resident Sam Attianese led Simsbury (1-0) with three hits, including a double and two RBI. Mason Valentino had a double, single and one RBI while Jack Montgomery was 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBI. Tate Valerio hit his first home run of the American Legion season.

Torrington (0-2) was led by Mike Paniati with two hits. Nichols was 0-2 with a 6.35 ERA in nine appearances with RPI this spring. In 11.1 innings, he struck out 12 batters.

Simsbury returns to action on Wednesday they travel to Avon (1-0) to face Post 201 at 5:45 p.m. at Buckingham Field.

Avon 2, Plainville 1
AVON, June 10 — Avon (1-0) opened their Zone 1 season on Sunday with a 2-1 decision over new Zone 1 member Plainville on a single from Justin Olson in the bottom of the seventh inning at Buckingham Field. Avon pitchers Connor Harris and Will Boone combined to limit Plainville (0-2) to just one hit.

Plainville moved into Zone 1 this summer with long-time rival Southington moving to Zone 5.  Avon hosts Torrington on Tuesday at 5:45 p.m. at Buckingham Field.
