Undefeated Simsbury Legion tops Winsted to remain in first place in Zone 1

WINSTED, June 17 – Nate Orluk, Tate Valerio and Sam Attianese each had two hits as the Simsbury American Legion baseball team remained undefeated with a 7-3 Zone 1 victory over Winsted on Sunday at Walker Field.

Orluk (Granby) and Valerio (Simsbury) were each 2-for-4 while Sam Attianese (Granby) was 2-for-5 with one RBI. James Mattson (Canton) was 1-for-2 with two RBI for Post 84, now 7-0 overall and 3-0 in Zone 1.

Simsbury and Bristol share the Zone 1 lead at 3-0 with Avon in second place. Bristol handed Avon (3-1) their first Zone 1 loss of the season on Sunday, 5-4.

Jake Nichols (Granby) earned the win on the mound for Simsbury, pitching five innings, allowing one hit and striking out seven. Dylan Schaetzel (Canton/Avon Old Farms) pitched two innings of scoreless relief, giving up two hits and fanning three.

Simsbury squares off against Bristol on Monday night at Memorial Field beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Bristol 10, Avon 7
AVON, June 16 – Avon’s Brayden Nemarich had a double, triple and three runs batted in but undefeated Bristol outlasted Avon, 10-7 in Zone 1 Junior Legion (17-and-under) action on Saturday at Buckingham Field.

Max Raha was 2-for-4 for Avon, which had seven hits, while Sam Smith was 1-for-3 with three RBI. Millian Jain took the loss on the mound for Avon (4-3). Avon, which had seven hits and committed five errors, scored four runs in the seventh inning. Bristol improves to 4-0.
