With a win over Wolcott on Wednesday, the Avon American Legion baseball team is just the second program to win at least three straight Zone 1 titles.
AVON, July 11 – Jeremy Zarwanski and Chris Jacobs each had RBI doubles as the Avon American Legion baseball team beat Wolcott, 4-2 on Wednesday at Buckingham Field to become just the second team in Zone 1 history to win at least three consecutive zone championships.
Avon (16-3-1, 15-1 Zone 1) won their 12th consecutive Zone 1 contest to win the league championship. The only other team with three or more Zone 1 titles is Bristol, which has captured three or more titles on seven occasions since 1960.
Avon pitcher Will Boone had a no hitter going through three innings before giving up a solo home run in the fourth inning. But Post 201 didn’t sulk and went back to work getting three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on RBI doubles from Zarwanski and Jacobs along with a RBI single from Ryan Ollestad.
Avon added another run in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 4-1.
Wolcott (4-11) did bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning but Jacobs came on to secure his third save of the season. Boone improved to 2-0 with the victory.
Avon returns to action on Thursday night with a game at Muzzy Field at 5:45 p.m. against Bristol. They close out the Zone 1 campaign on Tuesday, July 17 when they host Winsted at Buckingham Field.
The 2018 state tournament begins on Saturday, July 21 and Avon will host a first round game against the fourth place team from Zone 8. It’s part of a four-team group with the winner of the double-elimination group advancing to the Northern Regional tournament in Bristol. The No. 3 team from Zone 7 and the Zone 6 runnerup are part of Avon’s group.
Simsbury clinched a spot in the state tournament with a 7-0 win over Plainville Wednesday.
