McCone has solid game as Tribury gets past Canton, 2-0

CANTON, July 12 – Tribury Twisters pitcher Matt McCone had a solid all-around game as he helped lift the visiting Twisters to a 2-0 Tri-State League victory over the Canton Crushers at Bowdoin Field on Thursday night.

McCone allowed just two hits and struck out 10 to keep the Canton offense at bay. At the plate, he also contributed with a RBI double in the fourth inning and driving in a run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning.

Canton (1-13), which dropped their 11th straight game, had singles from Heath Cotton and Andrew Tremley.

Only once did Canton get a runner to third base. In the sixth inning, Sean Bahre walked and moved to second base when Cotton reached on an error. Bahre moved to third base on a fielder’s choice but McCone got Ben Kulik to ground out to second base to end the inning.

Tribury remains a half-game behind Winsted (6-9) for the 12th and final spot in the Tri-State League playoffs that begin July 26. The Crushers have been eliminated from the playoff chase.

Earlier last week, the Crushers had seven hits but fell short in a 4-1 loss to the Bristol Greeners at Bristol Eastern High School on Sunday. Brad Burney went five innings to earn the win while Jerry LaPenta pitched the final four innings to pick up a save.

Zach Bartolome was 4-for-4 and received a walk in the eighth inning. Ben Mazzone had two hits while Devin Pitcher had sacrifice fly for Bristol (9-5).

Bryant had two hits for Canton, who also received hits from Bahre, Trey VandeBogart, Mulhall, Jon Scippa and a double from Jesse. Taylor Riley took the loss on the mound for the Crushers, despite striking out four.

Canton has two games on Sunday. They host Naugatuck (9-4) in a makeup game at 2 p.m. at Mills Pond Recreation Center before moving over to Bowdoin to host the Torrington Rebels (2-12) at 5 p.m.
