Winsted Legion gets timely hits and shuts out Simsbury, 7-0

Simsbury’ Aidan Walsh took the loss Thursday as Post 84 lost to Winsted at Walker Field, 7-0.

WINSTED, July 12 – Kevin Sullivan had a two-run double with two outs in the fourth inning to help lift the Winsted American Legion baseball team to a 7-0 Zone 1 victory over Simsbury Thursday night at Walker Field.

Winsted (10-7, 10-6 Zone 1) led by two runs after three runs before breaking the game open with five runs in the fourth inning. Post 43 scored on a base-loaded walk, a two-RBI double from Sullivan, an error and a RBI single from pitcher Vinny Tancreti.

Tancreti went the distance on the mound, giving up just three hits and striking out five batters. Luke Benneche, Joe Patrina and Tate Valerio each had singles for Post 84.

With the loss, Simsbury (13-7-1, 9-7 Zone 1) falls into fourth place in Zone 1, a game behind Winsted with two Zone 1 games left on the schedule. If Simsbury and Winsted finish tied, Simsbury will get the edge since they won the three-game season series this season between the two teams. Winsted has won four of the last six games between the two programs over the past two seasons.

The top four teams in Zone 1 qualify for the state tournament and both teams have secured their invitations.

Simsbury travels to Bristol on Sunday for a doubleheader with Post 2 at Muzzy Field beginning at 1 p.m. Simsbury closes out the regular season on July 17 when they travel to Wolcott. The state tournament begins Saturday, July 21.
