Off to best start in 15 years, undefeated New Britain beats Simsbury

NEW BRITAIN, Sept. 29 – The Simsbury High football team had opportunities Friday night against New Britain. They just couldn’t convert. And the Trojan defense struggled to stop New Britain QB Tahje Yopp and his teammates.

Yopp ran for 102 yards and three touchdowns as the Hurricanes handed Simsbury their fourth straight defeat in a 30-7 decision in Central Connecticut Conference play at Veterans Memorial Stadium Friday night. New Britain rushed for 329 yards and improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2003 when they went undefeated (12-0) and won the Class LL championship.

The Hurricanes (4-0, 2-0 CCC Div. I West) took a 14-0 lead after a 36-yard touchdown run from Kaiyon Gunn and a 2-yard TD run from Yopp.

Simsbury (0-4, 0-3 CCC Div. I West) cut the lead in half in the second quarter on a four-yard touchdown run from quarterback Jackson Butler.

But that was it for the Trojans in terms of scoring. “The defense played lights out,” New Britain head coach Tebucky Jones told the New Britain Herald. “They bent a little, but didn’t break. [Our] front seven has been playing well all year.”

Butler completed 19-of-43 passes for 233 yards but he was intercepted twice. Jeffrey Coleman caught 10 passes for 130 yards while Patrick Shanley pulled in four receptions for 51 yards.

Simsbury shut down the Trojan running game. Butler led the way with 35 yards on 11 carries. Mark Bedson was limited to just 10 yards on 10 carries.

Simsbury returns to action in search of their first victory of the season on Friday when they host Conard (1-3, 0-1 CCC Div, I West) beginning at 7 p.m. at Holden Field.
