With three wins, Canton girls improve to 6-1; Canton boys win two of three

VERNON, Sept. 26 – The Canton High girls cross country team had four runners in the top five as they improved to 6-1 with three victories Wednesday in North Central Connecticut Conference action. The Warriors actually won all three by forfeit since Hartford Classical, Rockville and East Windsor didn’t have at least five runners – the minimum number to score in a meet.

Rockville’s Kyleigh Percy won the 3.1 mile race in 22:50 followed by Canton’s Helena Winkler, Jenna Cuniowski, Maeve Balavender and Lila Hunt.

The Canton boys went 2-1 in a competitive meet, dropping a two-point decision to Rockville, 27-29 but beating Hartford Classical, 21-39 and beating East Windsor by forfeit, 15-50.

Rockville had the top two runners in the race but Canton made it close by taking the next four spots. But the Rams took the next three spots to earn the victory. Keith Thomas finished fifth overall for the Warriors in 20:42 followed by teammate Sean Richard in sixth place just eight seconds behind.

The Warriors return to action on Wednesday when they host Somers and HMTCA at Stratton Brook Park in Simsbury.
