AVON, October 29 – After losing two straight matches to close out the regular season, the Avon High girls volleyball team beat New Britain, 3-1 on Monday night in the first round of the Central Connecticut Conference tournament.
The Falcons (13-6, 11-5 CCC) beat the Hurricanes by scores of 25-15, 25-14, 20-25 and 25-6 behind a season-high 22 kills from junior Emily Dempsey and 10 kills from junior Baylee Brau.
Setter Abby St. Onge had a season-high 41 assists for the Falcons while Noelle Powers had 13 digs. Dempsey had 12 digs.
Avon bounced back from a pair of shutout losses to Farmington, 3-0, and Bristol Eastern, 3-0, last week. Farmington’s win over the Falcons clinched the CCC West Patriot title for the Indians.
Avon’s run in the CCC Tournament ended at the hands of No. 2 RHAM on Tuesday night. The Sachems eliminated the Falcons with a 3-1 quarterfinal victory (25-13, 25-17, 23-25, 25-10).
St. Onge had a strong game with 31 assists, 10 digs and two blocks. Dempsey had a team-high 18 kills while Brau had seven kills.
The Falcons will return to action next week in the CIAC’s Class L tournament.
