CANTON, Oct. 27 – The rain was steady and it was cold – 41 degrees.
But it didn’t stop 76 runners from coming to Collinsville on Saturday morning to run in the second annual Collinsville Trick or Trot road race to benefit Canton’s Dollar for Scholars scholarship program.
“Runners are crazy,” Farmington’s Jackie Birge said while laughing before the race. “What are you going to do?”
Birge won this race a year ago and she repeated as woman’s champion Saturday morning, finishing seventh with a time of 21:42.
Bethel’s Piotr Kostyk first came to Collinsville to run the Burlington to Collinsville Classic in May. He loved the area and was happy to come back to run in Collinsville again. “Why not come out and enjoy some pre-Halloween festivities,” he said.
Kostyk easily won with a race record time of 17:53. He won by over a minute over Elliott Via, who was second in 19:14 and Ross Via, who was third in 19:15.
And there were several runners who ran in costume – even with the rain.
“It took a little while to warm up and the wooden (floor on the railroad) bridge was slippery,” Kostyk said. “But it was a good (race). There was a good crowd and a lot of (Halloween) costumes. I would do it again.”
Birge said one of the biggest challenges was the wind coming off the river that chilled the runners.
Race director Laurie McKenna thanked the runners for competing in the rain and the volunteers that helped. She also praised the help she received from Bremar Rental, Mr. Trophy, ShopRite of Canton and Collinsville Screen Printing along with the assistance the race received from Michael Taricani and Canton High cross country and track coach Tim O’Donnell, who helped with timing.
