Despite record-setting night from Butler, Conard outlasts Simsbury in shootout

WEST HARTFORD, October 5 – Quarterback Matthew Langevin completed 21-of-34 passes for 403 yards and five touchdown passes to lead the Conard High football team to a 41-28 win over winless Simsbury in a CCC Division I West contest Friday night in West Hartford.

The two teams combined for more than 730 yards passing in the game that included eight touchdown passes.

Langevin, who also ran for a touchdown, threw three TD passes to Sean Guevara, who caught a team—high six passes for 108 yards. Langevin threw a pair of TD passes to Justin Furze, who caught four balls for 151 yards.

The game was tied at halftime, 21-21 but Langevin had three TD passes in the third quarter including a pair to Furtze to take command of the contest. Conard (2-3, 1-1 CCC Division I West) has won four of the last six games in the series that dates back to 1974. It was the most points scored by the Chieftains in the series since scoring 49 in 1983.

Butler passed for a record 334 yards, breaking the record of 331 set a year ago by Jackson Masters against South Windsor, and completed 32 passes, erasing the record of 29 also set last year by Masters in a game against Conard.

Freshman Jackson Harper caught a career-high nine passes for 99 yards for Simsbury (0-5, 0-4 CCC Division I West) while Jeffrey Coleman caught seven passes for 139 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Simsbury has a bye next week and returns to action on Friday, October 19 when they host South Windsor (0-5) at Holden Field. The contest against the Chieftains was the final CCC Division I West game of the season for the Trojans. … Conard leads the series between the two schools, 26-16-2.
