SIMSBURY, November 8 – Paige Deppe, Sarah Thomas and Jamie Rubenstein each scored individual goals as the No. 4 Avon High field hockey team beat East Lyme, 3-1 in Thursday’s Class M quarterfinal game at Ethel Walker School.
The win puts Avon (14-3) into the Class M semifinals next week for the fifth time in the last seven years against No. 8 Sacred Heart Academy, which upset top-seeded Suffield, 1-0.
After earning a bye in the second round, Avon opened the tournament with goals from Deppe (team-leading 20th goal), Thomas (12 goals) and Rubenstein (3 goals). Thomas and Rubenstein each had assists.
The Avon defense kept the ball away from goalie Kat Pringle, who made one save in net. Avon had 14 shots on goal in the victory.
Avon will be making their first semifinal appearance since 2015. They had four straight semifinal appearances from 2012-15.
