CANTON, October 31 – It was mid-October and the Canton High field hockey team was reeling. The Warriors lost to Conard, 6-2 and it was the fourth loss in the last five games for Canton, which was three games under .500 with a 4-7 record.

But since that October afternoon, the Warriors have rebounded. They won four of their final five games to finish at 8-8 and enter this week’s Class S tournament on a roll.

No. 13 Canton (8-8) will travel to No. 4 Westbrook (13-1-2) on Tuesday for a 2 p.m. contest. It will be the second game of the year between the two teams. The Purple Knights prevailed in the first contest in mid-October with a 1-0 decision.

Canton closed out the season with 20 goals in their final five games with a 1-0 win over Lewis Mills on October 22, a 6-2 rout of Shepaug Valley, a 4-1 win over Mills four days later, a big 8-2 victory over E.O. Smith-Storrs and one goal in a 2-1 loss to Northwestern on Halloween.

The biggest scoring output of the season came in the 8-2 win over E.O. Smith in Storrs. Huff had two goals in the win while Charron, McNally, Antarsh, Oliva Richardson and Madi Bahre each scored goals. It was the most one-sided victory for the Warriors since beating Somers, 8-0, in 2016.
