With two victories, No. 1 Canton advances to Class S quarterfinals

CANTON, February 28 – The top-seeded Canton High girls basketball team has taken care of business in their first two CIAC Class S tournament games.

The Warriors advanced to the Monday’s Class S quarterfinals with a 64-37 win over NCCC rival Somers on Thursday night.

Canton (24-1) will host No. 8 Old Lyme (17-5) on Monday night at 7 p.m. The winner will face either No. 4 East Hampton or No. 28 Northwest Catholic in the semifinals on Friday, March 8.

The Warriors drained nine 3-point shots against Somers with Lauren Eschenbrenner (12 points) sinking four. Lauren Puglielli had 14 points for Canton along with a pair of three-point shots.

Abby Charron led the way for Canton with 15 points, nine steals and eight assists.

The Warriors opened up their 2019 tournament with a dominant 60-37 win over Tourtellotte-Thompson on Monday night.

Charron had a game-high 24 points and seven assists to lead the Warriors. Paige Brown scored eight points and pulled down eight rebounds. Puglielli scored 10 points for Canton, which held a commanding 36-18 at the half.
