EAST HAMPTON, May 16 – The Rose brothers helped get it done Thursday against the Bellringers. The two juniors combined to go 7-for-9 at the plate with five RBI and two doubles to lead the Canton High baseball team to an 8-6 non-conference win over East Hampton in eight innings.
It was the third straight win for Canton (9-10), which secured their fourth straight trip to the Class S tournament on Wednesday with a victory over Hartford Magnet Trinity Catholic Academy.
Canton had a season-high 16 hits against East Hampton (1-17) but stranded 11 runners on base. Jack Rose was 4-for-4 with a double and two RBI while Matt Rose was 3-for-5 with three RBI. Drew Ferrone was 2-for-5 with one RBI while Michael Bronson (2-4) also had a pair of hits for the winners.
Pitcher Devin Brown pitched a solid 4.1 innings of relief to pick up his second win of the season. He allowed just five hits and struck out four – getting out of two sticky situations in the fifth and seventh inning.
After East Hampton had tied the game at 6-6 in the fifth inning, the Bellringers had runners on first and second base with just one out. But Brown got consecutive batters to fly out to Ferrone in center field to end the threat.
In the seventh inning, East Hampton had runners on first and third base with two outs. But Brown got the hitter to sharply line out to Jack Rose at third base and send the game into extra innings.
In the eighth inning, Nate Lincoln led off with a single to right field. He stole second base and moved to third base when Michael Sullivan grounded out to second base. With two outs in the inning, Jack Rose walked before Matt Rose lined a single to center field allowing Lincoln to score and give Canton a 7-6 lead. Ferrone’s RBI single to center field drove in Jack Rose for an insurance run.
