Avon Legion sweeps a pair from Hartford to win third straight game

Miles Borenstein was 3-for-4 with one RBI in game two Saturday to help Avon Post 201 sweep Hartford.

AVON, June 15 – The Borenstein brothers helped get it done for the Avon American Legion baseball team.

Trailing by one run in the bottom of the seventh inning, Miles Borenstein drove in the tying run with a single past second base and Emmett Borenstein won the game with a sacrifice fly to left field as Avon beat Hartford Post 142, 3-2 and sweep a Zone 1 doubleheader Saturday at Buckingham Field.

Post 201 won the opener over Hartford, 6-1 to win their third straight Zone 1 contest.

Hartford (0-4, 0-4 Zone 1) took a 1-0 lead on a bases-loaded walk in the second inning in the nightcap only to see Avon tie the game in the sixth inning. Miles Borenstein (3-for-4, RBI) singled, moved to second when Jake Coppen reached on an error and scored on Emmett Borenstein’s single to center field.

Hartford rallied in the top of the seventh inning to take a 2-1 lead thanks to two singles and another bases-loaded walk.

Avon (3-5, 3-2 Zone 1) stormed back in the bottom of the seventh inning. Nick Amatulli led off the inning with a walk and was replaced by pinch runner Connor Galliher. Avon’s Max Raha singled and a bunt single from Matt Leopold loaded the bases.

Miles Borenstein’s single to center field drove in one run to tie the game at 2-2. With one out, Emmett Borenstein’s sacrifice fly to left field drove in the winning run.

Pitcher Arjun Grover (1-0) went the distance on the mound for Avon, scattering seven hits and striking out five to earn his first victory of the summer. Robert Lloyd and Jose Correa each had two hits for Hartford.

In the opener, three Avon pitchers combined to limit Hartford to just two hits and strike out seven in a 6-1 victory. Coppen (1-1) got the start on the hill for Avon and pitched five innings, striking out six.

Raha was 3-for-3 with two stolen bases for Post 201 while Coppen was 2-for-3 with a two-RBI double in the fifth inning. Emmett Borenstein was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI. Amatulli was 2-for-2 with one RBI.

Avon returns to action on Sunday with a Father’s Day matinee at 1 p.m. at Hall High in West Hartford when Post 201 challenges West Hartford (4-2, 3-1 Zone 1) in another Zone 1 matchup.

Hartford, West Hartford, Berlin and Newington are new members of Zone 1 this year after realignment of the state’s zones.
