
Avon’s Miles Borenstein was 2-for-3 with a double in game two of Sunday’s Zone 1 doubleheader with Newington at Buckingham Field.
AVON, June 9 – The Newington American Legion baseball team erased early leads by Avon Post 201 to sweep a doubleheader in the Zone 1 opener for both teams Sunday at Buckingham Field.
Newington Post 117 erased a two-run lead to win the opener, 4-2 and overcame an early one-run deficit in game two to earn a 7-1 decision.
Avon (0-5, 0-2 Zone 1) committed six errors in the two games, giving up five unearned runs. Max Raha had four hits on the day for Post 201.
In the opener, Avon took a 2-0 lead after three innings. Post 201 took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a double steal with Raha scoring from third base and Jake Coppen safely reaching second base. In the third inning, Raha singled and scored on a single from Matt Leopold for a 2-0 lead.
Newington (2-1, 2-0 Zone 1) cut the lead to one run when Anthony DeBlasio reached on an error, moved to third base on a single by Tyler Nyberg and a successful steal of home. Post 117 scored three runs in the fifth inning on a RBI single from Ryan Saindon, a sacrifice fly from Nicholas Babineau and a two-out RBI single from Xavier Mitchell to take a 4-2 lead.
Joe Zawisza went the distance on the mound for Newington, allowing five hits and striking out seven.
In game two, Avon took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Raha singled and moved to second base on a passed ball. He scored on a RBI single from Leopold.
Newington tied the game in the second inning but broke it open in the sixth inning with five hits and two Avon errors that led to three unearned runs.
Avon starting pitcher Arjun Grover gave up just one run in five innings of work. Miles Borenstein gave up six hits in the sixth inning and took the loss for Post 201.
Raha and Borenstein were each 2-for-3 in game two with Borenstein hitting a double. Sobolewski was 2-for-2 with a double for Newington while Mitchell was 2-for-4 with a double.
The two teams play the final game of their three games this summer on Monday night when Avon visits Newington at 5:45 p.m. Newington joined Zone 1 this season along with Berlin, Hartford and West Hartford after the state committee realigned the state’s zones, reducing the number of zones from eight to six.
