Darien is voted No. 1 in final top 10 girls lacrosse poll of season

Canton’s Fionna McNally (4) plays tight defense against Stonington’s Emma Sabbadini (8) in the Class S semifinals.

Darien High returned to the top of the top 10 state coaches poll. The Blue Wave (21-2), who won their sixth Class L championship in the last seven years, were the unanimous selection as the No. 1 team in the state with New Canaan (18-5) coming in at No. 2. Darien beat New Canaan, 12-6 in the Class L final.

Class M champion East Lyme (17-4), who beat St. Joseph-Trumbull, 10-6 in the Class M championship game made their debut in the top 10 at No. 9. It was the first state title for East Lyme since 2006.

Three-time Class S champion New Fairfield (21-1) finished at No. 8 after a dominating 18-5 victory over Stonington in the Class S championship game. New Fairfield has won 11 consecutive CIAC tournament contests.

The Rebels became the second school in state history to win at least three straight titles. Darien won five straight from 2013 to 2017 and three in a row from 2007-09.

Seven of the top 10 teams in the poll were from the FCIAC including the top five schools. No. 10 Greenwich (8-10) had a losing record but still had enough respect from the coaches voting in the poll to earn a spot in the top 10.
