Canton’s Caputo wins 3rd dual meet; Record-breaking win for Avon’s Martin

BOLTON, Sept 25 – Canton’s Julia Caputo easily won her third dual meet of the season as the Canton High girls cross country team swept Bolton, 27-30, East Granby, 26-29, Civic Leadership of Enfield, 17-42, and Science and Innovation High from New Britain, 15-50, on Wednesday.

Caputo, who captured Small School Division title on Saturday at the Winding Trails Invitational in Farmington, won Wednesday’s race with a winning time of 20:59. East Granby’s Emily Kowal was second with a time of 22:51. Maeve Balavender (3, 23:45) and Grace First (4, 24:45) each had a top five finish for the Warriors (7-2, 5-2 NCCC)

Bolton took the top two spots in the boys race but Canton took six of the final seven spots in the top 10 to slip past Bolton, 25-34 and beat East Granby by shutout, 15-50. It was the first loss of the season for Bolton (9-1, 7-1 NCCC). Lucas Carini of Bolton won the 3.1 mile race by 30 seconds with a time of 17:35. Canton also shutout Civic Leadership and Science and Innovation by 15-50 scores.

Sean Richard led Canton with a third place finish with a time of 19:14, followed by Matt Barton (4, 19:19), Ryan Nickerson (5, 19:33), Kevin Csizmesia (6, 19:40), John Holoweski (7, 19:41), Gabriel Mower (9, 19:46) and Jack Dendiger (10, 19:48).

Canton (6-3, 4-3 NCCC) returns to action next Wednesday when they host Coventry, East Windsor and HMTCA at Stratton Brook Park in Simsbury in NCCC action.

Record-breaking win for Martin
AVON, September 25 – Sophomore Jack Martin set a new course record on Tuesday at Fisher Meadows as the Avon High boys cross country team battled Central Connecticut Conference powerhouses Hall High in West Hartford and Glastonbury.

Martin won the 3.1 mile race with a course record time of 15:22.03 at Fisher Meadows in Avon. Glastonbury’s Jacob Smith was five seconds off the pace with a time of 15:27. With three runners in the top 10, Glastonbury swept Avon, 22-36 and Hall, 28-29. Avon (1-5) also lost to Hall, 23-34.

Avon’s Tyler Hinrichs was seventh with a time of 16:34 with Dan Carvalho (14, 17:00), Luke Hester (15, 17:06) and Jevonte Eaves (18, 17:11) earning top 20 finishes.

In the girls race, Avon (2-4) fell to Glastonbury, 23-35, and Hall 20-39. Avon’s Rhiannon Richmond finished second with a time of 18:32.4 that would have been a course record. But it was Hall’s Jenna Zydanowicz with the record after a dominating victory. Zydanowicz beat Richmond by nearly 40 seconds with a winning time of 17:51.4.

Gabrielle Richmond was eighth for the Falcons with a time of 19:29. Mareen Ek (13, 19:55), Logan Jacobs (17, 20:28) and Bryneth Chang (32, 22:47) rounded out the top five for Avon.
