AVON, October 5 – Two Avon runners came away with victories at the second annual Avon Volunteer Fire Department 5K road race Saturday at Pine Grove School.
Nicola Beretta set a new course record of 17:39 with his 19-second victory over Bethel’s Piotry Kostyk. Beretta erased the record of 19:30 set by Phil Roucoulet last October. The top three runners in the race broke the old course record.
In the woman’s race, Avon’s Mel Hamel had a solid victory over Naugatuck’s Raffaele Moriello. Hamel finished 15th overall with a time of 24:52 to earn the victory. Moriello was second with a time of 26:53.
There were 104 finishers in the race.
