
Simsbury’s Cooper Schneider was one of five Simsbury players with a hit in Wednesday night’s CEBA loss to Newington at Memorial Field.
SIMSBURY, August 5, 2020 – Newington’s Samuel Dionne was 2-for-2 with a pair of singles while teammate Ryan Saindon was 2-for-4 with one RBI to lead the Newington Under 19 baseball team to a 5-3 win over Simsbury in the Connecticut Elite Baseball Association season finale for both teams at Memorial Field on Wednesday night.
Simsbury (5-16) used seven pitchers to throw one inning each but Newington (10-11) was able to scrape together six hits to earn the victory.
Five Simsbury players had hits led by Cooper Schneider who had an RBI double in the first inning. Simsbury led 2-0 after one inning thanks to a sacrifice fly from Connor Anthony.
Newington score five unanswered runs in the next three innings to take a 5-2 lead, A third run came across in the seventh inning thanks to an error.
Cayden Thomas, Matt Rose, Danny Coppinger and Jack Rose each had singles for Simsbury. On the mound, Anthony struck out two in his one inning of work.
The Connecticut Elite Baseball Association was designed to be a one-year bridge to give youngsters ages 13-19 an opportunity to play some baseball after American Legion cancelled their summer baseball programs in May.
Simsbury and Avon are expected to rejoin American Legion next summer. The two teams played in Division I in the CEBA and the top two teams – Berlin and Meriden – qualified for post-season play.
