GLASTONBURY, Sept. 27, 2022 – The Avon High boys soccer team has never beaten Glastonbury in 11 attempts. But they are getting closer.
Matias Monteiro tapped in a pass from defender Ryan St. Onge with six minutes remaining in regulation as the Falcons battled No. 3 Glastonbury to a 1-1 tie on Tuesday in CCC West action. It was the first goal of the season for Monteiro.
The play began with a long throw-in from leading scorer Braden Gilbey (six goals) that was headed toward the goal by St. Onge. Monteiro tapped it in for his first goal of the season.
The Guardians, ranked No. 3 in the latest Class LL/L state coaches poll, had another shot from close range with two minutes remaining but Avon keeper Buster Akers was up to the challenge and made the save. Glastonbury (6-0-1) outshot the Falcons, 23-5, and had a 17-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Glastonbury took a 1-0 lead when Vihaan Shah tapped in a pass at close range with 15 minutes left in the game. The Falcons are 0-9-2 against Glastonbury as a program.
The Falcons return to action on Thursday when they host Maloney at Fisher Meadows Field.
BOYS GOLF
Farmington 162, Avon 170
AVON, Sept. 28, 2022 – Blake Barrett shot an even-par 35 Wednesday at the Golf Club of Avon but Farmington’s Michael Guerrera and Caleb Smith each shot a 39 to lead the River Hawks to an eight-stroke win over the Falcons, 162-170 on Wednesday. Barrett was the medalist for the Falcons, who slip to 9-5 on the season. Farmington improves to 7-1.
VOLLEYBALL
Simsbury 3, Avon 0
SIMSBURY, Sept. 28, 2022 – The Simsbury High girls volleyball team clinched a CIAC tournament berth with a 3-0 win over Avon on Wednesday night, 25-18, 25-12, 25-15. The Trojans are now 8-1 on the year.
The Falcons (2-5) were led by Katelyn Wankier with nine kills and Jocee Powers with 16 digs. Olivia Evanko had 14 assists for Avon, who returns to action on Friday with a road match at Glastonbury.
Canton 3, East Windsor 0
EAST WINDSOR, Sept. 28, 2022 – The Canton High girls volleyball team earned their second win of the season with a 3-0 sweep of East Windsor on Wednesday. The Warriors, who improve to 2-6 on the season, swept the Panthers, 25-6, 25-16 and 25-20 to snap a four-match losing streak. East Windsor slips to 1-8 on the year.
Berlin 3, Lewis Mills 1
BURLINGTON, Sept. 28, 2022 – Geena Vincenzo had seven kills and 17 digs to lead the Berlin High girls volleyball team to a 3-1 win over the Spartans on Wednesday, 25-15, 20-25, 25-8, 25-13, in a CCC South contest.
Berlin (6-3) gave up just 21 points in the final two games to earn the win. Alliana Wick had five kills, four serving aces and seven digs for the Redcoats. For Lewis Mills (4-4), Alyssa Behrendt had four kills, four serving aces and six digs while teammate Lily Coates had two kills and four blocks.
