Avon spikers sweep East Hartford for first win; Mills, Simsbury also sweep

EAST HARTFORD, Sept. 12, 2022 – Olivia Evanko had 19 assists, five kills and five service aces to help the Avon High girls volleyball team won their first match of the season Monday with a 3-0 win over East Hartford, 25-13, 25-18, 25-9.

Katelyn Wankier had six kills and three service aces while Ainsley Evans added five kills and four aces for the Falcons, now 1-1. Jocelyn Powers had 13 digs, three assists and three aces. East Hartford slips to 0-2.

The Falcons built on their success from Saturday’s CIAC Early Season tournament in Woodbridge. Avon went 4-6 on the day that began early at 8 a.m. with a series of one-game matches up to 25 points. After first round pool play, Avon moved to the Silver bracket pool  where they finished second.

Farmington 3, Maloney 0
FARMINGTON, Sept. 12, 2022 – The River Hawks (1-1) won their first match of the season with a 25-20, 25-20, 25-20 win over Maloney.

Lewis Mills 3, Rocky Hill 0
BURLINGTON, Sept. 12, 2022 – Betsy Buchanan had 16 assists while teammate Sammy Mitchell had eight kills as Lewis Mills (2-0) remained undefeated with a 25-18, 25-15, 25-9 win over Rocky Hill in Central Connecticut Conference action. The Terriers slip to 0-2.

Simsbury 3, Newington 0
SIMSBURY, Sept. 12, 2022 – Maddy Seymour had nine kills and eight digs as the Trojans improved to 3-0 with a sweep of Newington Monday in CCC action. The Trojans have yet to drop a game this season.
