AVON, Oct. 11, 2022 – Katelyn Wankier had 10 kills and three blocks as the Avon High girls volleyball team earned their third win of the season with a 3-1 win over Granby in a non-league contest on Tuesday night. The Falcons (3-8) prevailed with scores of 27-25, 19-25, 25-16 and 25-15.
Olivia Evanko had 26 assists, eight digs and three blocks for Avon while Jocee Powers had 21 digs. Paola Ortega had eight digs and two aces.
For Granby (10-2), Jayne Hiatt had 15 kills and 12 digs while Ellie Hernsdorf had 30 assists and 10 digs. After winning 10 of their first 11 matches, the Bears received votes in the first top 10 coaches poll of the season.
The two programs are old volleyball rivals from the North Central Connecticut Conference (NCCC). Avon joined the Central Connecticut Conference in 2016.
Lewis Mills 3, Northwest Catholic 0
BURLINGTON, Oct. 11, 2022 – Emma Fallon had 10 kills, a block and one serving ace as the Lewis Mills girls volleyball team won for the second time in three matches with a 3-0 sweep of Northwest Catholic on Tuesday, 25-15, 25-21 and 25-12.
Peyton DesJardin had seven serving aces and six digs for Mills (7-6) while Cassie Martinotti had seven kills for the winners. Northwest Catholic slips to 1-13 on the season.
Mills returns to action on Friday night when they travel to face Bristol Central.
Darien leads top 10 poll
Undefeated Darien (10-0) received seven of 10 first place votes to earn the No. 1 spot in the first state high school girls volleyball top 10 poll that was released Monday. Greenwich is ranked No. 2 with undefeated Joel Barlow (10-0) at No. 3.
Simsbury (12-1) is seeded fifth in the top 10 poll with undefeated Seymour (12-0, No. 6) and Griswold (10-0, No. 10) also in the top 10.
BOYS SOCCER
Rocky Hill 4, Avon 3
AVON, Oct. 11, 2022 – Austin Murawski had two goals to lead the Rocky Hill boys soccer team to a 4-3 win over Avon on the turf field outside the high school. Aki Bhadbad scored with 5:13 left in the second half to cut the lead to one but the visiting Terriers withstood the Avon attack to earn the victory.
Braden Gilbey and Lucas Monteiro also scored for Avon (4-3-3) with goalie Buster Akers making one save in net. Avon had a 16-6 advantage in shots on goal but Terrier goalie Andrew Gilberto got the job done with six saves.

WEST HARTFORD, Oct. 11, 2022 – The Conard High boys golf team had all five players break 40 as the Red Wolves rolled to an easy 19-stroke win over Lewis Mills on Tuesday at Rockledge Country Club, 149-168. Camden Rancourt earned medalist honors with a 37. Eli Pelleitier had a 40 to lead Lewis Mills, now 1-11.
