Career-high 18 points from Standish helps Falcons win opener

Avon’s Adi Standish (10) had a career-high 18 points as the Falcons won their season opener with a 23-19 win over Rocky Hill on Tuesday night.

AVON, Dec. 13, 2022 – The Avon High girls basketball will have some experience in the lineup this winter and third-year head coach Drew Faucher hopes that it can translate into additional victories.

Two-time All-CCC West guard Sophie Mango returns along with junior center Adi Standish, Lindsay Arigoni, Gianna Godbout and Mya Hall that all saw significant playing time a year ago.

“We’ve been trying to build (the last two seasons). We have some girls with some varsity experience and we have some good, young talent,” Faucher said. “If it all comes together, we could have a competitive season.”

The Falcons got their season off to a strong start on Tuesday night with a 23-19 win over Rocky Hill in a Central Connecticut Conference game.

Standish had a career-high 18 points to lead the Falcons (1-0), who had several open shots in the game but they rolled off the rim or just missed. Mango had three points.

“I like the versatility of a lot of our (players),” Faucher said. “It allows us to mix and match a bit depending on how the game goes.”

Both teams struggled shooting the ball on Tuesday night so it was a close contest throughout the game.

Madisyn Aurigemma’s rebound of a missed basket put the Terriers ahead by two, 21-19 with 5:25 remaining in the game. Standish hit a pair of foul shots with 5:03 remaining to tie the game at 21-21 and drove to the basket with 4:28 left to give the Falcons a 21-19 lead.

Avon missed several opportunities to extend the lead but continued to grab offensive rebounds to extend possessions.

Standish hit a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left to push the lead to four, 23-19. Standish eclipsed her previous career-high of 17points against Canton a year ago on Dec. 16. 2021.

Avon returns to action on Friday night when they host Plainville beginning at 6:45 p.m.
