Strong defense lifts Simsbury girls past Southington

Olivia Jarvis, shown in last March’s semifinals, had a great game Thursday night in the win over Southington.

SOUTHINGTON, Jan. 5, 2023 – Lauren Sabia had a team-high 18 points to help lead the Simsbury girls basketball team to their fourth straight win after a 46-29 win over Southington Thursday night in CCC West action.

The Trojans (6-1) were in control from the start. They began the game with an 11-0 run, not allowing Southington to score a point in the first quarter. ”It was the best eight minutes of defense that we have played as a team this season,” Simsbury coach Sam Zullo said.

Simsbury extended the lead to 17 points in the second quarter and kept that lead in double digits for the remainder of the contest.

Olivia Jarvis had nine points, three blocks and six steals for the Trojans along with 13 rebounds and five assists. Teammates Faye Kaplinski and Amanda Gallagher each had seven points for Simsbury.

Southington (4-4) was led by Lily Copper with 10 points and Hannah Blanchard with eight points.

Simsbury returns to action on Monday when they face Avon on the road beginning at 5:45 p.m. before facing Windsor and Hall on Wednesday and Friday, respectively, all on the road.
