In the final regular season game of the season at Dunkin’ Park, the Yard Goats came up just short in a 4-3 loss to the Reading Fightin Phils in front of 6,287 on Sunday afternoon. Reading’s Roc Riggio continued swinging a hot bat when he hit a two-run single in the fifth, but Aidan Miller’ RBI single in the seventh inning capped the victory for Reading.  The Yard Goats loss combined with Somerset’s win put Hartford 3½ games behind Somerset (35-28 second half, 70-62 overall) for the final playoff berth in the Eastern League’s Northeast Division with six games left in the regular season. Hartford (31-31, 67-64) heads to Richmond for a six-game series with the Giants’ affiliate.  Reading took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Bryson Ware hit a two-run home run off Hartford starter Connor Staine. The Yard Goats got a run back in the second when Dyan Jorge hit a two-out RBI single, cutting the Fightin Phils’ lead to 2-1.  The trailing runner Juan Guerrero was thrown out at home plate trying to score on the same play. Trailing 3-1 in the fifth inning, Hartford rallied for a pair of runs and tied the game in the fifth inning on a huge double by Roc Riggio.  The Yard Goats infielder smashed a double to the fence in left center field, scoring Benny Montgomery and Dyan Jorge to make it 3-3.

The Yard Goats jumped ahead early, but couldn’t hold on as the Reading Fightin Phils pulled away late to win 9-7 in front of 6,546 on Saturday night at Dunkin’ Park. Hartford scored four in the first inning, then added another in the second to take an early 5-0 lead, but an eighth inning go-ahead RBI single by Felix Reyes proved to be the deciding factor. Five of Reading’s runs came with two outs in the inning. The Yard Goats jumped ahead early with a four-run first inning. Jared Thomas ripped an RBI double to deep center before scoring on a passed ball, Jose Cordova hit into an RBI groundout, and Braylen Wimmer scored on a wild pitch from Reading pitcher Matt Manning, giving Hartford a 4-0 lead. Hartford added another run in the second when Roc Riggio drove in Julio Carreras on an RBI groundout, boosting the Yard Goats’ lead to 5-0.

PRO SOCCER
Hartford 1, Miami 0
At Miami
Jack Panayotou, on loan from MLS’ New England Revolution this season, scored his first USL Championship goal Saturday night to lift the Hartford Athletic to a 1-0 win over Miami FC in USL Championship play. Nine minutes into the second half, Hartford’s Beverly Makangila stole the ball off a Miami defender and carried it until just outside the 18-yard box. Selflessly, he dished the ball out wide to a wide open Panayotou, who let the ball roll across his body before striking it one-time with his left foot into the back of the net, giving Hartford the 1-0 lead. With its third win in the last five games, Hartford (9-9-5) is fifth in the Eastern Conference with the top eight teams qualifying for the playoffs. Miami (5-13-5) is last in the Eastern Conference. It was Makanglia’s first assist of the season.

A late go-ahead home run from Bryant Betancourt led the Yard Goats to a tough 7-6 victory over the Reading Fightin Phils in front of 6,488 on Friday night at Dunkin’ Park. Five different Yard Goats drove in runs in the effort, including Roc Riggio, who blasted a two-run shot in the sixth. Jack Mahoney tied a season high six innings pitched, while allowing just two runs.  The Yard Goats (31-29 second half, 67-62) are 1.5 games out of a playoff spot with eight games remaining. Somerset (33-28, 68-62) leads the Goats.

Trailing 2-0, the Yard Goats broke through in the sixth when Reading reliever Eiberson Castellano balked, allowing Cole Carrigg to score. Riggio followed by launching a two-run home run to right field, giving Hartford a 3-2 lead. It was Riggio’s 13th home run of the season. Hartford quickly responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning on RBI doubles from Nic Kent and Jared Thomas, followed by an RBI single from Juan Guerrero, putting the Yard Goats ahead 6-3. Reading scored three runs of their own in the eighth on RBI doubles from Dylan Campbell and Bryson Ware, tying the game 6-6. Betancourt cracked a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to give the Yard Goats a 7-6 lead.  It was his ninth homer of the season and landed in the second deck in right field.  Bryce McGowan pitched the ninth to earn a save.

Charlie Condon and Juan Guerrero each homered, and the Hartford Yard Goats pitching staff combined for 11 strikeouts in a 2-1 victory over the Reading Fightin Phils on Tuesday night at Dunkin’ Park.   Condon cranked his ninth homer in the first inning, and Guerrero blasted a go-ahead shot in the fifth inning leading Hartford to its second straight win.  Ben Shields struck out five batters over the first two innings, and the bullpen retired 12 straight batters later in the game. The Yard Goats are half of a game out of a playoff spot with 11 games remaining in the regular season.

The Reading Fightin Phils got on the board first as Aidan Miller led off the game, smashing a home run to left field off Yard Goats starter Ben Shields.  After allowing the leadoff homer, Shields retired 10 of the next 13 batters, and had five strikeouts over the first two innings. The Yard Goats answered in the bottom half of the first inning when Charlie Condon hit a home run to left field off Reading starter Estibenzon Jimenez to tie the game 1-1.  The line drive homer down the left field line by Condon was his 9th since joining the Yard Goats.  The Yard Goats took the lead in the fifth inning when Juan Guerrero smashed a go-ahead solo home run to left field off Jimenez, to make it 2-1 Yard Goats.  It was Guerrero’s second home run of the season.
