The Avon High boys swimming team picked up five wins in 11 meets this season and finished second at the CCC North championship meet in West Hartford under first-year head coach Todd Dyer.

Junior Abir Dutta won two events at the CCC North championship meet, capturing the 200-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 1:50.37 and the 500 free in a season-best time of 5:03.82.

Since Avon doesn’t offer varsity swimming in the fall for girls, any interested girl is welcome to compete on the boys team but they must meet boys times to qualify for the CIAC championship meet.

At the girls-only Splash Classic, a meet for girls across the state that compete during the winter season, Avon won the event for the 15th time since 2004 and the second straight season.

The Falcons were led by Sara Robertson who won the 100-yard backstroke and three top two finishes in relay races.

Avon (5-6, 2-3 CCC North) had a fine day at the CCC North championship meet with Dutta winning two events. Cooper Brown was fourth in the 500 free with a time of 5:28.93 and fifth in the 200 free with a time of 1:58.44.

William Shine finished fifth in the 100 breast stroke with a time of 1:09.95.

Charlotte Sohn finished fourth in the 100 breast stroke with a personal-best time of 1:08.56 while Robertson was fifth in the 100 backstroke in 1:02.64.

At the Class M championships at Cornerstone in West Hartford, Avon finished 14th with a score of 153 points. The Falcons were led by diver Lizzie May, who was sixth with a total of 324½ points, good enough to qualify for the State Open championships.

Dutta was less than a second off his personal-best time in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:50.86 to finish in 15th place. He was also 15th in the 500 freestyle in 5:14.12.

Avon’s 200-yard freestyle, consisting of Dutta and three freshmen – James Yan, Jude Matthews and Cooper Brown – finished 12th with a time of 1:39.69 while the 400 freestyle relay (Dutta, Yan, Matthews, Brown) was 10th with a time of 3:39.04.

Sohn swam a personal best time of 1:08.47 in the 100 yard breaststroke to finish 18th.

May was the only Avon competitor at the State Open. She finished sixth with a score of 324.15. It’s the best finish for an Avon diver at the Open since Sarah Grandy finished second in 2023 and 2022.

At the Splash Classic in January, Robertson won the 100 backstroke with a winning time of 1:07.91. Avon’s 200 yard freestyle relay (Robertson, Sohn, Sarayu Reddy and Merrill Bonelli) finished first with a winning time of 1:57.51, a full second ahead of second place Holy Cross.

Avon’s 200 freestyle relay (Bianca Ma, Kaelyn Haughery, Sarayu Reddy, Mehek Bhargava) finished second with a time of 1:54.67, more than five second behind Shepaug Valley.

In the 400 freestyle relay, Avon (Sohn, Bhargava, Bonelli, Robertson) finished second with a time of 4:02.93 behind Shepaug.

Bonelli was third in the 50 freestyle with a personal best time of 26.73.

Freshman Sadie Rubin of Granby won two events – 200 IM and 100 breast stroke. Holy Cross’ Dorina Dobruna won two events and two silver medals while her Crusader teammate Lily Torrance won two events, took second and finished third.
