Not many pro teams get a farewell tour before leaving but Sun will

The final WNBA season for the Connecticut Sun in Uncasville begins May 10 against Seattle.

Most professional sports teams that leave a city don’t get a farewell tour.

The NFL’s Baltimore Colts literally slipped out of the city in the dead of night in March 1984 on their way to Indianapolis with moving vans filled with the team’s equipment.

The NHL’s Hartford Whalers had about two weeks to finish out the 1997 season once it became public knowledge that the Whalers would leave Connecticut. The team’s final game in Hartford against Tampa Bay was an emotional contest with fans lingering in the arena long after it was completed.

In December 1999, when the American Basketball League folded, the New England Blizzard women’s basketball team was on the road and a few days later, Blizzard players held a rally in the Civic Center mall for a few hundred fans.

Connecticut Sun fans will get 22 opportunities to say goodbye to their favorite WNBA team this season which begins on May 8 in New York. The Connecticut franchise will be moving to Houston for the 2027 season.

The Sun will play 19 games at the Mohegan Sun Arena, two in Hartford and one in Boston.

They’ve branded the 2026 season as the Sunset season – a season-long celebration of the Sun’s 24 seasons in Connecticut with a series of special initiatives, events and fan experiences to honor the team’s impact and legacy.

“The Sunset Season is our opportunity to celebrate an incredible legacy built together with our fans, players, partners,” said Connecticut Sun President Jen Rizzotti. “We intend to honor every chapter of our story and make this final season our most meaningful one yet.

“This season is about gratitude, celebration, and giving our fans the farewell they deserve. The Connecticut Sun story is one of resilience, community, and heart, and the Sunset Season will honor all of it,” Rizzotti said.

Throughout the season, the organization will welcome back Sun legends—iconic players and coaches who shaped the franchise. Special recognition moments and storytelling features will highlight their enduring influence.

The Sun will have a specially designed Sunset-themed home court, will recognize those season ticket holders who have been with the team since the first season in 2003 and will have a homecoming game, reuniting generations of Connecticut Sun players.

Connecticut’s first home game is Sunday, May 10 against Seattle.  The final regular season game will be Sept. 24 against expansion franchise Toronto.
