Canton athletes earn All-State and All-NCCC honors

Seven Canton High athletes earned All-State honors for their play on the field this spring. Mackenzie Robinson (softball), Kian Murphy (boys lacrosse), Jackson Bowne (boys lacrosse), Owen Weller (boys lacrosse), Helen Canny (girls lacrosse), Lucy O’Connor (girls track) and Kayla Berning (girls track) earned All-State honors.


BASEBALL

Record: 10-13, 7-4 NCCC (fifth)

NCCC Tournament:  Lost to Coventry in final, 13-3 in five innings
CIAC state tournament:  Lost to Somers in Class S first round, 7-6
Of note: When Somers passed on an invitation to the league tournament, Canton took the bid and beat league co-champion Suffield, 4-3 in the semifinal.


SOFTBALL

CIAC state tournament: 28th in Class S (5 pts.)
Of note: Senior Warren Pelletier was seventh in New England in the hammer (16 pounds) with a personal best throw of 132-6. He was sixth in the hammer (12 pounds) at the CIAC championships with a personal best throw of 178-8.


GIRLS TRACK and FIELD

Record: 10-1, 10-1 NCCC (second)
All-NCCC: 
 Ally Chickos (shot, discus), Charlotte Davis (300 hurdles), Kayla Berning (100, long jump, triple jum)
All-State: Kayla Berning (heptathlon, triple jump), Lucy O’Connor (high jump)
NCCC Tournament:  2nd place (108 points)
CIAC state tournament: 3rd in Class S (49 pts.), 33rd State Open (6.25 pts.)
Of note: Sophomore Kayla Berning became the first Canton girl to win the CIAC heptathlon with a personal-best score of 4,287 points.


BOYS TENNIS

Of note: For the fifth year, Canton was part of a co-op program with East Granby. The Crusaders were the host team.

CIAC state tournament: Third at CIAC Division III championships (332)
Of note: Canton finished behind East Catholic (313) and Coventry (318) at the Class S meet. Coventry (303) and Ellington (312) were the top two at the NCCC championships. In the dual meet portion of the schedule, Canton beat Coventry by two, 157-159 but lost to Ellington by six, 160-166. Rueckert was individual medalist six times while Slavin was individual medalist five times. Slavin played at the State Open and was 37th with a 83.


GIRLS GOLF

Of note: The lowest team score of the year was a 249 against Mercy. Teams need at least four golfers to register a team score. Canton had at least four golfers in just four of 13 events this spring.
