Canton wrestlers earns tough 1-point win over Somers

CANTON, Feb. 5 – Nate Haller (189) and Rich Jones (160) had two key pins, Matt Grisevich (130) had a crucial major decision and Brandon Leach (140) lost by just a decision as the Warriors came away with a big 40-39 win over a hard-nosed Somers squad Thursday. The win lifts Canton (16-9, 5-1 NCCC) in a second place tie in the NCCC with Somers (19-6, 5-1).

Haller and Jones each won by pin and Grisevich not only won by he won by nine points to pick up a crucial extra team point. Wins by eight to 14 points are worth four points instead of three for a normal decision.

Leach had a tough bout at 140 pounds but he stayed off his back and gave up only three points instead of six for getting pinned. Steve Carpenter moved up a weight class had a key pin at 125 pounds as well. Haller was 22 pounds lighter than his opponent but ended up with the pin.

“The kids came up big tonight,” Canton assistant coach Ed deSimas said. The only low note for the Warriors was a knee injury to Nate Getler (29-2) at 135 pounds. He was hurt during the match and is out for the season.

It’s the first time that Canton has won at least five matches in the league since 2002.
