Girls lacrosse team seeks first varsity win

In its second season as a varsity team, the Canton High girls lacrosse team  (0-13, 0-10 NCCC) will be looking for their first victory under coach Andy Dylag. It won’t be easy. More established programs such as Avon, Granby, Suffield and Somers have more experienced players and youth programs feeding the high school programs.

Canton has yet to reap the benefits from its youth lacrosse program but there are a significant number of eighth grade players that could help next year. “It’s going to be difficult but we’re going to have to work on our offense and defense and the girls know that,” Dylag said. “We’re young with only five seniors.”

Senior co-captains Amanda Valley and Kayla Gilhooly will be at midfield along with senior midfielder Lindsey Phelps, Sarah Shalis and senior forward Colleen Barnhart.

Gerry deSimas, Jr., is the editor and founder of The Collinsville Press. He is an award-winning writer and has been covering sports in Connecticut and New England for more than 40 years. He was inducted into the New England High School Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2018.
